2017 Tiger Relays Champions

Quick Recap -

Belleville Tiger Relays
Results on Athletic.net -

Although yesterday's lineup went through many changes, in the end we took a small but competitive squad to Belleville.  Your focus was incredible and the team spirit was unstoppable.  Due to the small roster, many of you tripled and quadrupled off of very little rest.  This was not the original plan, but you pulled it off magnificently.  It was a terrific display of team work, with many PR's on the track and in the field.

A special shout out to Craig Latty, who after running a PR in the 1200 and on only about 30 minutes rest, came back to replace an ill Matthew Parran in the 1600. Craig PR'd in the 1600 too, scoring valuable points late in the meet. Great job, Craaaig!

Gold Medalists:
High Jump - Tyson Grant & Avery Williams
800 Relay - Grant, Jacob Toussaint, Williams, Donovan Isaac
400 Relay - Toussaint, Grant, Williams, Isaac
Middle Distance Medley - TC Christian, Toussaint, Isaac, Xavier Hill

Silver Medalists:
Long Jump - Toussaint, Zack Wiltse, Luke McCollum
Shuttle Hurdle - Grant, Williams, Joey Cornell, Hunter Scsavnicki
400 Meter Dash - Hill
1600 Relay - Christian, John Childs, Isaac, Hill

Bronze Medalists:
Discus - Cole Chappell, Harlan Pfefferle, Allan Haynes

Other Medalists:
1600 - Jacob Maas
400 - Christian

Jefferson FR / SO - Congratulations to the 9th and 10th graders who competed at Jefferson on Saturday. Everyone came home with a medal. Great job!!!

Coming Up -

  •  On Tuesday, 5/25 we travel to Saline for our most important meet in April.
    • I've scored the meet with a tentative lineup and we can win.
      • It will take more of the same competitiveness and attention to detail that you've displayed so far this season, but when we execute our best performances, we will win.
    • Meet Preview
LOVE THE SPORT - TRUST THE TEAM -
WILL TO WIN - ACCEPT THE RESULTS
  • Seniors - Start thinking about The Golden Triangle
    • This year's Golden Triangle is the same day as prom.  Traditionally, this is the first  "goal meet" of the season.  It's at this point when we expect big PR's against big competition.  However, I understand that prom is important to many of you.  Therefore, seniors who are attending prom are officially excused from the meet.  However, if you think you can do both and want to compete in an earlier event, we need to have that conversation.
    • 10:00 AM Field Events
      • Men’s Pole Vault, Discus. Women’s Shot Put and High Jump. Men’s & Women’s Long Jump (Two Pits)
    • 11:00 am Distance Medley Relay followed by Freshman Mile
    • 12:15 PM - Sprint / Hurdle Semi Finals –
      • Note: No Preliminaries. Semi Finals Only.
    • 4 x 800 will be run 15 minutes after the conclusion of the Sprint Semi Finals.
    • 3:00 pm - Running Finals beginning with the 110 / 100 Hurdles
  • Mason Invitational - Another conversation to have is one regarding the Mason Invitational.  For decades, Mason has been a staple event for Trojan Track & Field.  However, a conflict was created when the SEC moved our conference meet to the Friday before the Regional and the day before Mason.   Mason is a fun meet.  Although no team score is kept, it's a great opportunity to see how our individuals and relays stack up to other Monroe County Schools.  The meet is usually very well attended and the Monroe News gives it thorough coverage.  Additionally, they hand out several special awards: Performer of the Meet, Track Athlete of the Meet, Field Athlete of the Meet, & Jerry Wing Mile Award.
    • A few options:
      • Don't go
      • Go, and go all out following the SEC meet
      • Go, but limit events following the SEC meet
      • Go with a "B" Team

Quick Recap -

Dual meet Vs. Ann Arbor Huron
Full team results & score
Results on Athletic.net - Look at all of those PR's!!!

What a terrific home meet.  After we finally got the timing system working smoothly, the meet went very well.  Thanks for taking care of one another.  Once again, our leadership was strong and you competed with sportsmanship & integrity.

A very special thanks to the parents who volunteered.  Thank you for your patience.  We're normally a little better organized with assignments / tasks.  On Thursday, we weren't sure of how we were going to time the meet until the last minute and we greatly appreciate your flexibility and helpfulness.
The meet was a good predictor for the rest of the season.  I've taken a close look at our strengths and weaknesses and I'm really looking forward to the championship season.  We still have work to do, but it's going to be a good year!!!

Coming Up -

  • This week, for those in town, we will train hard.  It's hard to believe, but this is our last week of heavy workouts.  We will still work hard, but from here on out, we will place the emphasis on racing over training and start thinking about additional qualifying standards -
  • Even though many of our athletes will still be out of town for Saturday's Belleville Tiger Relays, we can put together a lineup that will challenge for another invitational win.
  • Following break on Tuesday, 5/25 we travel to Saline for our most important meet in April.  WE CAN COMPETE WITH THEM!!!
    • If you're reading this and you're in town, be ready to work this week.
    • If you're out of town, please remember your commitment to our program.
    • We want you to enjoy your vacation, but when time allows, please try to follow our spring break training plan.
      • At the very least, take care of your body with daily cardio & strength, plenty of rest, and proper nutrition and hydration.

  • Most of the performances on the track and in the field went very well.
  • In spite of being early in the season and having almost no time to prepare outside last week, our exchanges, hurdling, jumping, throwing, starts, and other specific skills looked pretty good.
  • Most importantly, we again brought our best sportsmanship, integrity and toughness!!!
Stolen from legendary coach, Joe Newton, I asked all of you at the beginning of the season these three questions:
  1. Can I trust you?
  2. Do you expect excellence?
  3. Do you love MHS Trojan Track & Field?
With three meets and 20 practices under our belts, we're a 1/3 of the way through our season and your actions have answered yes over and again.

How do we move forward?
  1. With spring break on the horizon, continue to answer "yes."
    1. make good choices
    2. work hard
    3. take care of your teammates
    4. have fun
  2. Let me get out of the way - continue to lead!
    1. when you have the chance to do good, take it.
  3. ABE - Always be evaluating.
    1. ask yourself, "what went well today?" - "what could I have done better?"

A BIG THANK YOU TO COACH NYE AND THE THROWING CREW!!!
Yesterday, they spent the day cleaning and setting up our shot put and discus area!
